A guide to the Prince of Wales Stakes taking place September 13 in Fort Erie

Jockey Declan Carroll guides Sir for Sure to victory in the $150,000 Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine Raceway earlier this year. Sir for Sure is one of seven horses making up the field for the 87th Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Race Track on September 13.

The 87th Prince of Wales Stakes will take place on Tuesday, September 13 at Fort Erie Racecourse. Here are five things you need to know.

WHAT IS THE PRINCE OF WALES STAKE?

The race is the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The other races that make up the series are the Queen’s Plate, which took place last month at Woodbine, and the Breeders’ Stakes, which takes place on Sunday October 2. The Prince of Wales is run on dirt for a mile and three-sixteenths and is open to Canadian-bred three-year-olds.

THIS IS THE RICHEST RACE OF THE YEAR IN FORT ERIE HISTORY

With a purse of $400,000, 60% of which goes to the winner, this is the biggest event on the border oval’s racing calendar. This year’s race features a field of seven, including Queen’s Plate third, Sir for Sure, and local entry, Collaborative, racing for trainer Ravendra B. Raghunath and a group of Niagara-based owners. Queen’s Plate winner Moira skips the Fort Erie race, meaning there will be no Triple Crown winner in 2022. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Wando in 2003.
