The MyNorth Vacation Guide makes it easy to vacation in your own backyard.
Traverse City is one of the areas in the guide that helps you plan the perfect summer day in the Cherry Capital.
Start your day with a fun family activity as you explore the Dennos Museum’s Discovery Gallery.
“There’s tabletop space to color in, computer games you can interact with, and there’s infinity murals and magnetic walls,” said Jason Dake, assistant director of curriculum and learning. from the museum to the Dennos Museum. “So there are a lot of things that children can play with that are also suitable for older people.”
This summer there’s something new in the Discovery Gallery, a 25-foot mural by local author and illustrator Brianne Farley.
“This is a dinosaur-themed mural featuring dinosaurs from the late Triassic, as well as plants and other creatures,” Dake said. “It’s inspired by Bill Allen’s sculpture titled Dinosaur.”
Next, head to Old Mission Peninsula to spend the afternoon at Bonobo Winery.
“We’re talking primarily about our pinot noir and our chardonnay, then our sparkling,” said Todd Oosterhouse, general manager of Bonobo Winery. “The main reason for this is that our sparkling wine is made from pinot noir and chardonnay, so these two varieties together make very good products.”
But if wine isn’t your thing, opt for the seasonal granita.
“We make a great slushy. This summer we have our vodka lemonade, which is refreshing and tasty.
As you sip on your drink of choice, you’ll enjoy stunning views.
“We have a great 3,000 square foot patio, and the idea is that just to get the view not just from the top of the patio, but if you go down to the bottom, to the lawn, there’s more seating seated,” Osterhouse said. “We have a huge mural of the Big Eight there and some nice swings for great photo opportunities.”
Then grab something to eat at 7 Monks Taproom in downtown Traverse City.
“Seven Monks is a beer bar first and foremost, with great food. It’s easy, easy American food,” said Jim Smolak, co-owner of 7 Monks Tap Room.
You can also enjoy the balmy summer weather on their brand new terrace in their Back Abbey when having your meal.
“Who doesn’t like to eat out? For me, it’s one of my favorite things in life to be able to enjoy something outside, a cold beer and a good burger,” Smolak said.
To end your day in the cherry capital, watch the sunset at Clinch Park.
