New York City Weekend Travel Guide: How to Get Around the City on August 6-7

NEW YORK CITY — Whether you’re staying in town or heading to the beach — rerouted subways, street closures and train delays are poised to disrupt New Yorkers’ weekend travel plans.

Weekend metro changes

The MTA reports that there will be changes to 15 subway lines this weekend, including reduced service, localized express trains and the dreaded shuttle replacement.

Harlem Line – Station Reviews

You may need to change cars to exit at North White Plains Station

The southern section of the station’s platforms will be closed for repairs until spring 2022, so only six cars will be docked on some trains. Please listen to the train crew’s instructions to determine if you can get out of your car.

Consider making transfers at White Plains Station instead.

Urban area – Additional service

Some trains will make additional stops at Forest Hills for concert-goers on Saturday August 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You must be in one of the first six cars to exit. Take your ticket with you when you get off the train, it will be checked at the station before you can get out.

Oyster Bay – Suspended Party

No trains between Jamaica and East Williston August 6-8 and August 27-29, Saturday 12:01 a.m. to Monday 2:30 a.m.

Shuttle buses connect East Williston, Mineola and Hempstead, where train service is available to Jamaica and west. Click here to learn more about this service change.

Please allow up to 60 minutes of additional travel time or consider using the Port Washington or Hempstead branches instead.

Port Jefferson – Part Suspended

No trains between Jamaica and Hicksville August 6-8 and August 27-29, Saturday 12:15 a.m. to Monday 2:30 a.m.

The trains run in three sections as we realign the track west of Hicksville:

  • Between Huntington or Port Jefferson and Hicksville
  • Between Hicksville and Babylon
  • Between Babylon and Jamaica/Penn Station

Transfer to Hicksville and Babylon for continued service. Please allow up to 60 minutes of additional travel time or consider using the Babylon or Montauk branches instead. Click here to learn more about this service change.

There is no service to New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place or Westbury. Consider using Babylon or Hempstead branches instead. NICE Bus accepts LIRR tickets on the n22 and n24 bus routes between Hicksville and Mineola, and on the n40/41 bus route between Mineola and Hempstead. See nicebus.com for timetables. Between midnight and 5 a.m., when NICE Bus is not running, special shuttles will be provided between Hicksville and Mineola.

The last direct trains to run on Friday nights are at 11:22 p.m. from Port Jefferson, 12:19 a.m. from Huntington and 11:39 p.m. from Penn Station. Service resumes at 3:07 a.m. from Penn Station and 3:45 a.m. from Huntington on Monday morning.

Port Washington – Special Event

All trains stop at Mets-Willets Point Until further notice

Ronkonkoma – Suspended part

No trains between Jamaica and Hicksville

  • From August 6 to 8 and from August 27 to 29, from Saturday 12:15 a.m. to Monday 2:30 a.m.

Trains run in four sections as we install tracks and switches near Mineola:

  • Between Greenport and Ronkonkoma
  • Between Ronkonkoma and Hicksville (bypassing Bethpage)
  • Between Hicksville and Babylon (stop at Bethpage)
  • Between Babylon and Jamaica/Penn Station

Transfer to Hicksville and Babylon for continued service. Please allow up to 60 minutes of additional travel time or consider using the Babylon or Montauk branches instead. Click here to learn more about this service change.

Bethpage Runners: To travel to Jamaica, wait on Platform B for a double-decker train to Babylon. To travel to Ronkonkoma, wait on Platform A for a double-deck train to Hicksville. Use caution when crossing lanes at Stewart Ave.

The last trains to run on Friday evening are at 11:39 p.m. from Penn Station and 11:51 p.m. from Ronkonkoma. Service resumes at 1:51 a.m. from Ronkonkoma and 3:13 a.m. from Penn Station on Monday morning.


For beach lovers:

The MTA has put together a guide to its ticket packages for beach excursions. Here’s what you need to know:

long beach

Package includes discounted train tickets to/from Long Beach Station, beach admission and a voucher for the Long Beach City Trolley. The package is valid every day until September 5, 2022.

Fire Island Beaches

  • The Robert Moses package includes discounted train tickets to/from Babylon Station and Suffolk County Transit bus tickets to/from the beach. The package is valid until September 5, 2022.
  • Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines and Sailor’s Haven packages include discounted train tickets to/from Sayville Station, return taxi vouchers and return ferry vouchers from Sayville. The packages are valid until September 5, 2022.
  • Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park and Kismet/Fire Island Lighthouse packages include discounted train tickets to/from Bay Shore Station, return taxi vouchers, return Fire Island Ferries ferry vouchers and entrance to the lighthouse. The package is valid until September 5, 2022.
  • The Davis Park Package includes discounted train tickets to/from Patchogue Station, return taxi vouchers and return Davis Park Ferry vouchers. The package is valid until September 5, 2022.
  • The Watch Hill package includes discounted train tickets to/from Patchogue Station and return Davis Park Ferry vouchers. Note: The ferry to Watch Hill is located a short walk from the west end of Patchogue Station at 160 West Avenue. No taxi voucher is included. The package is valid until September 5, 2022.

Jones Beach

The Jones Beach package includes discounted train travel to and from Freeport Station and bus transportation (NICE Bus) to the East or West Bathhouse or Central Mall at Jones Beach. The package is valid until September 5, 2022.


Staycation: Here’s Which Streets Are Closed (For Events You Might Enjoy)

The following streets will be completely closed for summer streets on Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Itinerary:

  • Center Street between the Brooklyn Bridge exit and Reade Street
  • Lafayette Street between Reade Street and East 10th Street
  • Kenmare Street between Lafayette Street and Cleveland Place
  • Cleveland Place between Kenmare Street and Lafayette Street
  • Cooper Square between Astor Place and 4th Avenue
  • Fourth Avenue between Astor Place and East 15th Street
  • Union Square East between East 15th Street and East 17th Street
  • Park Avenue South between East 17th Street and East 32nd Street
  • Park Avenue between East 32nd Street and East 109th Street (including the overpass between East 40th Street and East 46th Street)

The following streets will be completely closed for the Brooklyn Mile on Saturday, August 6.

Ecuadorian Day Parade

The following streets will be completely closed for the Ecuadorian Day Parade on Sunday, August 7.
