The best week of the summer came back to Prescott Rodeo Week! Across the Quad Cities region, the week around the 4th of July is full of celebrations, fun and, of course, rodeo.

Although the oldest rodeo in the world is the main attraction, Prescott and the communities that support it go to great lengths to ensure that the best week of summer is in Prescott.

There’s no better way to spend a summer evening than at the world’s oldest rodeo.

Since 1888, Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc. has presented the annual World’s Oldest Rodeo® at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. For 2022, the rodeo will run from Tuesday, June 28 through Monday, July 4. Relax and enjoy your favorite events including steer wrestling, bareback riding, tie down rope, women’s breakaway rope, saddle bronc riding, team rope riding , women’s barrel racing, bull riding and other great entertainment! You can also shop at local vendors, participate in fun rodeo games, and sample delicious bites.

Sharlot Hall Museum: At the Rodeo, Pardner

Celebrating Prescott’s rich rodeo heritage and the 50th anniversary of Steve McQueen’s film Junior Bonner, Sharlot Hall Museum is pleased to present “To the Rodeo, Pardner”. An exhibition presenting
artifacts including saddles and bronc riding rigs from early Prescott rodeos, and the hat Steve McQueen wore while filming Junior Bonner. Fun for the whole family!

Junior Bonner 50th Anniversary Celebration

On the 50th anniversary of the film Junior Bonner, which premiered June 11, 1972, True West Magazine editor Stuart Rosebrook Ph.D. and Junior Bonner stage manager Bill Pierce will share a few – some of the “behind the scenes”. “Come celebrate with us.

Phippen Museum: a tribute to Junior Bonner

Join the Phippen Museum to honor the acclaimed film, Junior Bonner. Their exhibit will feature posters of the film from around the world. Photographs of the production and memorabilia are also on display.

Outdoor Movie Night: Junior Bonner

On the 5th anniversary of this movie based on the Prescott Rodeo, come watch under the stars on the dirt arena featured in the movie!

Junior “JR” Bonner is a slightly “over the hill” rodeo rider looking for his next step when he returns to his hometown of Prescott, Arizona for the annual rodeo.

The stands will be open for seating, if you wish to sit in the arena bring a chair! Vendors, concessions and the full bar will be open.

Rodeo Dance

Pull up your boots and join local musicians for several nights of dancing rodeo!

All three nights feature music from the “hardest working” artist, Sky Conwell. Country music is the root of Sky. His band Lonesome Valley plays popular country dance hits that span decades. Thursday, June 30 is “Family Night”.

Happy Hearts Rodeo

Come see kids with special needs, ages 5-12, become rodeo stars at Happy Hearts Rodeo.

There are five adapted events in the arena:

Barrel Racing – ride a stick horse to get around safety cones
Goat Tie – tie a ribbon around a stuffed goat’s tail
Live Horse Back – participants wear helmets and ride horses
Roping – roping a plastic steering head tied to a bale of hay
Barrel Riding – riding a slightly rocking barrel, which simulates a rearing horse or bull.

Mutton Bustin' Signals Prescott Rodeo

Mutton bustin’

The youngest cowboys and cowgirls of Rodeo tighten their jeans and ride an atypical wild animal abroad – the sheep, also known as the mutton. While all competitors are winners of the Mutton Bustin’ contest, the rider who holds out the longest will receive a shiny gold belt buckle.

Qualification requirements:
Age: between 4 and 7 years old
Weight: less than 55 pounds

Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo Frontier Days proudly presents the 135th Annual Rodeo Parade, held annually in downtown Prescott over the 4th of July weekend!

The theme for this year’s rodeo is “Celebrating 50 Years of Junior Bonner”, to honor the 50th anniversary of the classic 1972 western film starring Steve McQueen which was filmed in the Prescott area and at the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Grounds . The McQueen family is represented by Steve McQueen’s grandson, Chase McQueen, who is our 2022 Grand Marshal. Our Honorary Grand Marshal is Bill Pierce, who was the stage manager for the film Junior Bonner.

The Rodeo Parade is a wonderful tradition that celebrates our rich western history right here in Prescott, Arizona. We hope you will join us and help us celebrate this amazing tradition!

Whiskey Row Boot Race

The annual Whiskey Row Boot Race is a 100-yard race* on historic Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona. The annual race is a recreation of the historic foot race of previous years, but with an added twist: Competitors are required to wear cowboy boots while running, in keeping with the western atmosphere of Prescott and the festivities of the Frontier Days.

Celebrating its 39th year, the event is sponsored by Hensley Beverage Company in conjunction with Anheuser-Busch/Budweiser. The Hensley Beverage Company has participated in the Prescott Whiskey Row Boot Race for the past 39 years and it has become one of their favorite charity events. The annual run raises money for local Yavapai County nonprofits. The Hensley Beverage Company was founded in 1955 and is Arizona’s largest beer distributor.
