Shadowrun Trilogy: Shadowrun Returns Classes

There are a wide variety of courses available here, each focusing on a different aspect of lawless life on the streets of Seattle. Do you want your racer to be a sniper? A robotics genius with drones at his disposal? An agent of chaos, throwing flames and taking names? It all depends on what you really want your rider to be, what role you want him to play. Some classes will make your racer an all-around racer, and others will give you a more specialized skill set.

street samurai

The quintessential Cyberpunk role. A modern warrior with a code of honor, balanced by a thirst for money and recognition. Street samurai are some of the toughest and most impactful classes Shadowrun Returns has to offer. If you’re riding a street samurai, chances are you don’t care about all those hand gestures and incantations of mages, or the overreliance on cyberspace that comes with Decking. For a Street Samurai, the only tech you need to worry about is one that grants you maximum firepower.

Guns, grenades, knives and blades are the order of the day here. Street Samurai excel in both close and ranged combat, thanks to decent starting scores for Speed ​​and Strength. You start with a high Body attribute and the Dodge skill, which means you absorb damage better than any other class. Keep investing in these areas, and your Street Samurai will be an unwavering force of destruction.

Decker

Shadowrun Trilogy

The Decker is a more specialized class than most of the Shadowrun Trilogy. As expert hackers, the Deckers are able to hardwire their consciousness directly into the matrix of cyberspace and wreak havoc on the systems within. This gives you all sorts of benefits, from temporarily taking control of nearby machines to opening safes and downloading key information. The Decker is key to the entire cyberpunk aesthetic and can be a go-to for those looking for a less direct, more cerebral class to play. The Matrix is ​​a whole new playground for your character, which sets your Decker apart from other racers in terms of playstyle.

That being said, the Decker’s abilities are somewhat lacking outside of cyberspace, so it’s worth investing in physical or ranged skills to balance your toolbox. Even just putting a few points into weaponry can keep you from feeling overwhelmed in instances where you can’t fight your way to victory. At the very least, the decker starts out with some points allocated to body and close combat, so these are an option to pursue in order to increase your survivability.

Rigger

If you’ve ever watched Robot Wars and thought “Man, I wish that was my job,” then you’re far from alone. If you’ve ever watched Robot Wars and thought “This competition would be vastly improved if the robots engaged in real firefights”, then Rigger is the class for you!

Riggers are mechanical specialists, controlling powerful combat drones and letting them go to town on their meatiest foes. Like the Shaman, the Riggers don’t do the dirty work themselves. In a game where permanent companions are light, the Rigger’s drones help turn the tide against a wave of opponents. And not all of them are overwhelming firepower. Support Drones can be used to take cover, access otherwise inaccessible enemies, and generally shape the battlefield in your favor. Add some weapon skills so the Rigger itself doesn’t get left in the dust, and you’ll be on top of the scrap heap in no time.

Shaman

Shadowrun Trilogy

Shamans are charismatic spellcasters in the world of Shadowrun Trilogy. Their totemic connection to spirits grants them the power to channel and wield. As summoners of spirits, shamans fill a pet control gameplay niche. They focus less on doing damage themselves, and more on empowering their allies to do the work for them.

This is not to say that shamans rely solely on the power of their spirits to be effective. They also start with points in ranged combat, and their body and speed are nothing to sneeze at. While Shamans will be more effective at summoning and boosting allies, it is possible to build them to be more than capable of handling the job on their own.

The lack of a fleshed-out party system in Shadowrun Returns leads to supporting characters like the Shaman getting the short end of the stick. Dragonfall and Hong Kong both feature permanent party members that will take more advantage of your boosting abilities. As such, Shaman is recommended less in Returns than later entries in the trilogy.

magician

Shadowrun Trilogy

The Mage is the resident Spellslinger of the Shadowrun Trilogy. While the shaman taps into the nature spirits that still lurk in Seattle’s concrete jungle, the mage is a much more direct spellcaster.

There’s a wide range of spells available to you when you play the mage, from healing and buffing your armor and accuracy with firearms, to conjuring lightning and flame and stunning your enemies where they are. Mages solve problems. With enough planning, you’ll have something in your spellbook for every occasion. And since karma points for leveling are plentiful in Shadowrun Returns, you can spice up your spellcasting by occasionally switching up some ranged weapons if you like.

Really, the only thing holding the Mage back is his inherent fragility. Luckily, you can mitigate this by throwing more Karma points into Body. While you may start with a gap in the health department, it doesn’t take too much work to fill it. While you may remain a glass cannon in your heart, even glass can take a beating under enough armor!

Physical Adept

In the Sixth World, magic and technology intertwine in an uneasy alliance. Gunshots ring out in the neon-soaked night. Spells heal and injure equally. To live as a runner means to live a life always one step, one breath away from violence. So why rely on outside weapons, when you could hone your body into one instead? The Physical Adept is the Shadowrun Trilogy equivalent of the Monk, a hardened warrior who will bring you down with fists alone and absorb bullets as if his skin were covered in Kevlar.

Physical Adepts avoid outward manifestations of magic, drawing their power from within. Using Chi energy allows your Physical Adept to perform superhuman feats, standing against any other runner. If you want to play as a point of calm in the center of a raging storm, then Physical Adept is the class for you. Their body, will and strength all start out well and only climb higher with additional investment. Continuing to put points in Dodge couldn’t hurt either. This class stands apart from most of the other options available to you in the Shadowrun Trilogy. If your favorite part of The Matrix has always been “I know Kung Fu”, then this course is for you.

Shadowrun Trilogy: Return of Shadowrun – Karma

Before you drop into your new gig as a runner, it’s worth briefly touching on Shadowrun Returns’ leveling system. In most other games, Karma will probably make you think about moral choices; Paragon and Renegade, Good and Evil points which paint a picture of how the world views your character. Not in Shadowrun. Gray morality is the norm, even the most idealistic Runner is likely to be drawn into some shady activity sooner or later. Here, Karma is the XP name of Shadowrun Returns.

When you choose your class in Shadowrun Returns, you are given a small handful of Karma to distribute as you wish among your available skills. If it’s your first time playing, it’s definitely worth picking up one of the available classes and placing the remaining Karma wherever you want. But, if you’re a returning runner – or value complete control over your character building – Shadowrun Returns gives you the option to skip classes altogether and create your character from scratch. If you choose this option, you receive 34 karma points – with 3 bonus points if your chosen race is human – and you just have to place them where you want them. If you like certain aspects of a class, but prefer to mix and match them with other traits, this might just be the option for you.
