Your Guide to Kicking Off the Detroit Vacation


(WXYZ) – The 2022 Detroit Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, November 18 at Campus Martius Park, and WXYZ is a proud Tree Lighting Sponsor.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. and runs all night, with special performances from award-winning actor, singer, and songwriter Darren Criss, The Voice semi-finalist Zania Alake, and Brazeal Dennard Chorla, Detroit Youth Chorus, and Moreover. .

There will also be on-ice performances at the Campus Martius rink from US figure skating champion Mariah Bell, Team USA senior dance crew Eva Pate and Logan Bye, and several skate clubs. local.

Closed roads

Due to the thousands of people coming to Campus Martius, several roads will be closed for the event. They will close Thursday, November 17 at 5 p.m. and last until Saturday, November 19 at 6 a.m.

The road closures are:

  • Michigan Avenue between Woodward and Griswold
  • Fort St. between Woodward and Griswold
  • Woodward Avenue in Larned
  • Cadillac Square between Woodward and Bates
  • Monroe between Woodward and Farmer
  • Woodward at State/Gratiot

Transportation and parking

Parking is available throughout the city and there will also be shuttles that will take people from Campus Martius Park to Beacon Park where Light up Beacon Park takes place with the Children’s Tree.

You can take the People Mover to get around the city and get off at several stops near Campus Martius Park and walk.

Light beacon park

If you want to avoid the huge crowds, Beacon Park will feature different sounds and sights of the season, the Toyland-themed Holiday Lighting Spectacular, visits from Santa, a heated lounge, food trucks, a bar, live music and more.

The music will include The Casali Holiday Dancers, DJ Kid McFly and Aisha Ellis Trio.

Other activities include Santa’s reindeer, a ride on the little train and shows.

Other information

The City of Detroit will impose a curfew for minors 17 and under from 8 p.m. Nov. 18 to 6 a.m. Nov. 19 for the area around Campus Martius between State Street and Larned, Griswold, and Farmer, including Monroe, Cadillac Square and Woodward.

Minors may attend the tree lighting but must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult 21 years of age or older.

Minors violating curfew will be taken to DPD Downtown Services, 20 Atwater Detroit, MI 48226. Minors will be held there until picked up by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian may also receive a ticket for violation of parental responsibility.
